I am an African American woman who sees the merit in expressing identity and gender taboos. My self-portrait series is a juxtaposition of African American stereotypical imagery designed to engage the viewer through a whimsical lens. To me, it sheds tangible light on the absurdity of racial prejudices. My hope is that these pieces are food for thought, a catalyst for change or just a good laugh, your choice.
My family is from the South Side of Chicago. They were very involved during the civil rights movement and I’ve always been incredibly impressed by those who have the integrity to stand up for what they believe in. Making the self-portrait series is my quiet resistance, my Watermelon Revolution. This body of work tends to be quite poignant and sometimes disturbingly uncomfortable.
I’m currently a senior at Fort Lewis College. Because I’m still under the umbrella of a “student” I’ve taking this opportunity to explore different mediums and styles. My background is in drawing: pencil and charcoal, but I’m also experimenting with oil, acrylic, mixed media, digital and animation. In the future I plan to be involved with character design for animated films.
